GILAD
ATZMON and the ORIENT HOUSE ENSEMBLE
7.30-
8.30pm Fran Glendening Quartet
8.30pm GILAD ATZMON
Tickets:
£12.50 (£10 Club members)
For our first concert
of 2002, we are delighted to welcome back one of the most dynamic
jazz musicians in the world today, Israeli multi- reedsman GILAD
ATZMON. Since we first featured Gilad in 1997, we have seen his
career take off and he is now regarded as one of the most original
and exciting musicians on the scene today. Frequently described
as a 'saxophone phenomenon', he is equally at ease on the clarinet,
producing a unique sound on all his instruments.
Passionate about
his music, Gilad formed his ORIENT HOUSE ENSEMBLE to play multi-cultural
music- Jewish, Arabic and Balkan etc. and his band has become
one of the busiest ensembles around, frequently touring across
the UK and abroad. The Orient House Ensemble have just released
a new CD 'Nostalgia', receiving excellent reviews in the jazz
press. Gilad has said about this recording... " this album
is an illustration of my memories from the seashore...about unfulfilled
dreams and fantasy that dissolved into a broken rhythmic reality
". The Orient House Ensemble is a compelling blend of standards,
originals, fascinating rhythms and superb musicianship led by
a man with a burning desire to create something special. Completing
the line- up in the band are three very talented young musicians
- FRANK HARRISON (piano), OLI HAYHURST (double bass) and ASAF
SIRKIS (drums).
The support set
for tonight's concert features a vocal set by a very fine young
female singer, making her debut at the Club- FRAN GLENDENING
and her quartet. She released her first CD last year and has
recently completed a short residency at London's Pizza-on-the
-Park. Once again, the Club presents a great support set to get
you in just the right mood for a night of quality jazz.

JUNIOR
MANCE TRIO
Music starts at 8.00pm
(no support set)
Tickets £15 (£10
Club members)
For our 10th Anniversary Concert,
we present one of the all-time great jazz pianists- JUNIOR MANCE,
who is on a short tour of the UK. Junior Mance, who has played
with most of the leading figures in the history of
jazz, was born in Chicago in 1928. He was active on the scene
in his home town with Gene Ammons (1947-8) and then moved to
New York, becoming pianist in Lester Young's bop orientated group
of 1949. He then rejoined forces with Gene Ammons who had formed
a quintet with Sonny Stitt and they toured from 1950-1. After
National Service, Junior accompanied Dinah Washington from 1954-5.
He then toured and regularly recorded with Cannonball Adderley's
early quintet (1956-7), Dizzy Gillespie (1958-60) and Eddie Lockjaw
Davis/Johnny Griffen group (1960-61). In addition, Junior Mance
featured with these jazz legends- Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers,
Clifford Brown, Johnny Hodges, Howard McGhee, James Moody, Clark
Terry, Ben Webster to name a few!
In the early '60's he formed his
own trio, which also accompanied the superb singer Joe Williams.
Since the mid 1960's the Junior Mance trio has enjoyed considerable
success on his own. In the early 1970's, he and bassist Martin
Rivera began a partnership that lasted until 1980's. Currently,
Junior is in great demand both as solo performer and with his
trio. Known principally for a highly rhythmic, bluesy approach,
Junior Mance is also capable of a much wider range of expression
bringing instant identification on hearing him. He is a musician
who defines what jazz music is about.
Joining our special guest for tonight's
performance are two of the best in the business - ANDY CLEYNDERT
(double-bass) and STEVE BROWN (drums).
