Henry Armburg-Jennings, Sam Mayne, Lewis Wright with The Tim Lapthorn Trio

The new season kicks off with a great band featuring a front line of three of the best young musicians around, backed by the superb pianist Tim Lapthorn and his trio. Henry Armburg-Jennings impressed us all last year with his great technique and harmonic improvisation. Sam Mayne is in great demand on the UK jazz scene as well as featuring with a number of vocalists, including Katie Melua's recordings. Lewis Wright is without doubt one of the finest vibraphonists to emerge in recent years and currently is a member of the band Empirical and has also toured extensively with top vocalist Melody Gardot. With the brilliant Tim Lapthorn and his trio backing the front line, this concert will be fired up from the start.

Gary Smulyan with Nigel Price Trio

Making his first appearance at the Club, we are delighted to present top USA Baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan, who is on a short tour of the UK with the highly rated guitarist Nigel Price and his trio. Born in 1956, Gary joined Woody Hermann's band in 1978 and then moved to New York in 1980 where he quickly established himself, playing and recording with many of the jazz greats- Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Chick Corea amongst many others. He formed the powerhouse Three Baritone Band (with Ronnie Cuber and Nick Brignola) as well as leading his own bands, recording ten CD's in his own name. Gary is a four times winner of the Down Beat magazine critics and readers poll for baritone saxophone and a multiple award winner of numerous other polls. Supporting Gary Smulyan is top guitarist Nigel Price with his great organ trio.

Greg Abate with Geoff Eales Trio

A very welcome return for great USA saxophonist Greg Abate, who is appearing at the Club after a three year gap. Greg Abate's career spans over 35 years, starting with Ray Charles and Artie Shaw bands and then developing his solo career, leading his own groups with many guest appearances world wide. Steeped in bebop, Greg recorded his first CD Live At Birdland NYC in 1991 on the Candid Jazz Label with the trio of James Williams, Rufus Reid and Kenny Washington and has since released 12 CD's under his own name. The rhythm section is led by the inspirational Geoff Eales, one of the most sought after pianists on the London scene with the great Dave Green on bass and top drummer Simon Pearson. Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear Greg Abate, coupled with the Geoff Eales trio.

Peter King and Mornington Lockett with Steve Melling Trio

Expect fireworks when two of the finest saxophonists take the stage for tonight's concert. In the words of one critic (Dave Gelly) "Peter King is the finest alto saxophonist that Britain has ever produced , and one of the finest in the world today" and has been at the forefront of British jazz since he played at the opening of Ronnie Scott's Club in 1959. He is a joy to listen to with amazing technique and flowing improvisation. Tenor saxophonist Mornington Lockett is one of the finest players of his generation, always in demand and superb soloist in his own right. With Peter King's regular rhythm section led by the brilliant Steve Melling, this concert is one not to be missed.
