MARK McKNIGHT QUARTET featuring SEAMUS BLAKE

Doors open 7.30pm
Music starts 8.00pm Tickets £13

Mark McKnight (guitar), Seamus Blake (tenor saxophone), Ross Stanley (organ), James Maddren (drums)

The first concert of the Autumn season kicks off with a superb band, led by the brilliant young guitarist Mark McKnight, who will be playing the last date of a 16-night British tour. Originally from Belfast, Mark McKnight was early hailed as "the future of Irish jazz guitar" and following his studies at Berklee college, Boston has expanded his horizons through tours of the UK and Europe, both with his own groups and as a sidesman in other bands.

Mark's regular organ band with Hammond whiz Ross Stanley and rising star drummer James Maddren, has made such a critical impact that he is now able to sign up such major international stars as New York tenor saxophone icon, Seamus Blake, a regular member of the Mingus Big Band, and it's this stunning quartet that comes to Peterborough, following the release of their superb new album 'Do or Die'. This is music which is absolutely contemporary, yet has its roots in the kind of guitar/sax/organ groups that were almost the essence of the Blue Note sound in the '60s. As well as featuring originals from the album, the band will play some of the classic jazz standards to make this an evening to remember.

"McKnight is blessed with a gorgeous tone and abundant technique- he's already an exceptional talent" ......... Irish Times

"Seamus Blake is extraordinary- a total saxophonist" ........ John Schofield

MICHAEL GARRICK QUARTET celebrates the music of the MJQ

Doors open 7.30pm
Music starts 8.000pm Tickets £13

Michael Garrick (piano), Jim Hart (vibraphone), Matt Ridley (double-bass), Steve Brown (drums)

Michael Garrick has been at the forefront of British jazz for over 40 years. He is a pianist of manifest qualities, an improvising musician of invention and wit, a brilliant composer and has led or been part of many of the great British bands over this period. Michael's first band, formed in 1958, was inspired by the music of the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ). The MJQ played together as a regular unit from 1952-74 and not only created a unique style in modern jazz but also the compositions by John Lewis and Milt Jackson have become jazz standards in their own right. Recently, Michael decided to form a new band to recreate the magic of the MJQ and with the superb Jim Hart on vibes, this celebration will take us back to the days when the MJQ played their own very special jazz to packed concert halls all over the world.
With the interest this concert has already generated, you are advised to arrive early to guarantee your seat.

"Truly world class" ........ John Dankworth

Bobby Wellins and the Tim Lapthorn Trio

Doors open 7.30pm
Music starts 8.00pm Tickets £13

Bobby Wellins (tenor saxophone), Tim Lapthorn (piano), Arnie Somogyi (double bass), Stephen Keogh (drums)

A very welcome return to the club for one of the great names in British jazz, Bobby Wellins, who is joined by one of the finest young pianists on the scene, Tim Lapthorn . Bobby has been playing professionally since 1955 when he joined Vic Lewis' band and subsequently with Tony Crombie, John Dankworth and Tubby Hayes in the early days. Later, he formed a partnership with Stan Tracey, which has lasted to the present day, and along the way they recorded the famous 'Under Milk Wood' suite in 1965, which is still regarded as one of the best recordings ever by British jazz musicians. Bobby has made many fine recordings over the years, the majority as leader of his own quartet and is widely regarded now as the doyen of tenor saxophonists, with his instantly recognisable sound and superb technique.

Tim Lapthorn is without doubt one of the most exciting pianists to emerge in the UK in recent years and he brings his regular trio, with the very fine Arnie Somogyi on double-bass and drummer Stephen Keogh to complete the quartet. One thing is for certain, the evening will be pure quality jazz from start to finish.

"one of my favourite saxophonists in all of jazz - and I mean not just in the UK, not just Europe but everywhere in the world"......... Alyn Shipton
