John
Etheridge's "Sweet Chorus" - A Tribute to Stephane
Grappelli
Doors
open 7.30pm
Music starts 8.00pm Tickets £13
John
Etheridge (guitar), Chris Garrick (violin), Dave Kelbie (guitar),
Andy Crowdy (bass)
The new season kicks off with a
very welcome return after five years for this sublime band. Now
celebrating it's 12th year together, John Etheridge's Sweet Chorus
was originally formed as a personal tribute by John to his mentor
and inspiration Stephane Grappelli with whom he worked
for 5 years in the 70's and early 80's.
Taking it's cue from the Hot Club
of France -the legendary group that featured Grappelli and Django
Reinhardt the band features John's dazzling guitar work and the
scintillating violin of Chris Garrick. The relationship of these
two has been described as one of the most potent in European
jazz and backed up by the propulsive drive of Dave Kelbie (rhythm
guitar) and Andy Crowdy (bass) the band produces breathtaking
sallies through repertoire both old and contemporary. A must
for all fans of melodically based inspired, swinging acoustic
jazz, particularly in this centenary year of the birth of Django
himself.
'Chris Garrick is simply the most accomplished and expressive
jazz violinist on today's jazz scene... '
'John Etheridge is not only the most versatile guitarists around,
but also one of the very best'

Jazz Club 20th Anniversary Concert
Doors
open 7.30pm
Music starts 8.00pm Tickets £13
PJC
All Star Band featuring - Mornington Lockett (tenor saxophone),
Simon Spillett (tenor saxophone), Dick Pearce (trumpet), John
Critchinson (piano), Val Mannix (double bass), Dave Barry (drums),
plus John Pini (guitar) and Laurie Jacobs (saxophone)
This 20th Anniversary concert is
not only a very important milestone in the history of the Club
but it also promises to be a fabulous gig featuring
some of the very best musicians who have appeared at the Club
over the years. In fact, with Mornington Lockett, Dick Pearce
and John Critchinson we have three superb musicians who appeared
at the very first concert in 1992, as members of the Ronnie Scott
Sextet. Top drummer Dave Barry also played in the 1992 series
of concerts, and highly rated bassist Val Mannix first played
when Gilad Atzmon brought his quartet to the Club for his debut
in 1998. Simon Spillett gave his first performance at the Club
in 2006, and together with Mornington Lockett, we will have two
of the very best tenor saxophonists to be heard anywhere who
emdody the spirit of British Jazz with great technique and melodic
playing that reminds us of the late, great Ronnie Scott and Tubby
Hayes. Completing our front line is Dick Pearce who is one of
the very few British trumpeters regarded as world class, with
his own unique sound. Also joining in the fun will be our very
own Laurie Jacobs and the fine local guitarist John Pini, adding
a little local flavour to the evening.
For
tonight's concert, we will mix and match the musicians with sets
of variable length, showcasing our headline acts in the best
possible way. Towards the end of the evening, everyone will return
to the stage for a rousing finale to bring the evening to a close.
The Peterborough Jazz Club has been based at the Great Northern
Hotel since it's inception in 1992, apart from an enforced break
while the Hotel was refurbished. The music room has been noted
for it's great acoustics with a super ambience, with table service
for meals and a bar situated in the room. During the 2000 season
, the Club produced it's own CD 'We've all been there...' featuring
a dozen artists who had appeared at our place, who each kindly
donated a special track for the compilation CD, some of which
will be available to purchase at the concert. In addition, the
late great blind pianist Peter Jacobson in 2001 recorded a live
performance at the Club, 'On Your Marks', which was
widely acclaimed as one of his best recordings. We have been
firmly established for many years as one of the premier jazz
clubs on the national scene and over the past two decades the
Club has hosted many of the finest jazz musicians not only from
the UK but also from the USA, for which the Club is justly proud
- just look at the list of the headline names we've had since
